Q.

Equation of the plane that passes through point (–1, 1, –4) and is perpendicular to each of the planes –2x + y + z = 0 and x + y – 3z +1 = 0 is

View Answer

Correct choice: D

Explanation:

Any plane passing through (–1, 1, –4) is
a(x +1) + b(y –1) + c(z + 4) = 0 …………….(1)
Since –2x + y + z = 0 & x + y – 3z +1 = 0 are perpendicular to (1) then
– 2a + b + c = 0 and a + b – 3c = 0
Solving a/-3-1 = b/1-6 = c/-2-1
Putting value of (a, b, c) = (–4, –5, –3) in (1) we get the result.
